Dosage-Form Advantages
For dogs and cats, species-specific flavors (chicken/beef/fish) markedly improve acceptance. Weight-based segmentation or multi-strip regimens enable accurate mg/kg dosing. Administration is water-free and simple in field or stress scenarios. Unit blisters enhance hygiene and reduce mis-dosing or cross-contamination.

Typical Dose
Dosing commonly 0.5–10 mg/kg for small animals. Typical per-strip 1–50 mg; higher totals via multi-strip or lamination (API safety window permitting). To withstand mouthing and handling, select thicker, tougher films (60–120 μm) and rounded die-cuts.

Common Formulation Challenges (taste/bitterness/disintegration)
Anthelmintics/sedatives are notoriously bitter, requiring strong masking plus meaty top notes. Saliva volume varies widely between animals; breakup must remain reliable within 15–45 s to avoid shredding. Films must resist tearing yet avoid tooth/tongue sticking. Strong aromas can trigger over-sniffing/chewing.

Recommended Strategies & Targets
Use resinate + inclusion (± micro-coating) and 1–3% meaty flavors with antioxidants. Build PVA/HPMC matrices with glycerol/PEG plasticization to boost puncture and tear strength. Validate disintegration under low/medium/high saliva scenarios. Targets: puncture >2–3 N, tear energy ≥20% higher than a 60 μm control, ≥80% 5-min dissolution, peel 3–5 N. Choose high-barrier blisters to prevent odor migration and rancidity.
